Two Bridges

Years ago, if you wanted to cross the river Drau near the Village of Lipitzbach
you had to carefully work your way down one side of the embankment,
along a narrow road, then cross the lower bridge and struggle up the other embankment.
THEN THEY BUILT THE BRIDGE ABOVE.

The Ruins of the Castle of Griffen

Near Bleiburg in Carinthia you may find the Castle of Griffin.
On a precipitous rock, not much of the original Fortress is left.
But as a Viewing Point it has no competition

Above and Below:
Remaining parts of a formerly proud fortress.

From the top of this fortress you may view the countryside below for
as far as the eyes can reach.

Die Marterlen

THE MARTERLEN: This name is, unfortunately, untranslatable. It may have its origin from Marterdom. In any event, these little works of art are found throughout Austria, most particularly in Tirol or in Karinthia. In some cases they are placed by the family of an accident victim. In the very distant past, it may have been a farmer, gored by an angry bull, later an overturned tractor which killed a farm hand, and much later still the Marterle commemorates a driver of a "Moped" or some other motorized vehicle driven too fast.
Besides this commemorative aspect, there is probably another one. The following is only my personal supposition: Some of these Marterlen I found at the crossing of two footpaths, leading between some farmer's fields and I suspect that some of these have been erected by a pious farmer as a daily reminder to whom his gratitude for a plentiful harvest belongs.

Most are painted, but some are carved
or made in intricate mosaic.

Wetterbericht - Weather report -

Also, was kann ich euch schon sagen ueber das Wetter? gestern, schoener als vorgestern, heute schoener als gestern. Morgen? Ja wer weiss was morgen bringen wird.???
bertstravels...

Okay, what can I tell you about the weather? Yesterday, more beautiful than the day before and today much more beautiful than yesterday...tomorrow? Who knows what tomorrow will bring??
I awoke, as most mornings around 6am and went for a long walk in the brisk morning air, under a totally cloudless blue sky.
Yesterday, christin had to attend a funeral in Klagenfurt and I took the opportunity to visit an old friend in Villach. karli Ransmayr lives in Vienna, but is currently in a Rehab-Home in Villach, after having undergone a hip replacement. What a Rehab facility...Modern to the nth degree and beautifully furnished. On top of the 4th floor there is an indoor/outdoor Caffee, where we sat und drank some "Gschpritzten Apfelsaft" (Apple juice with Soda).. Karli had a glass of wine, which i declined since I still had a 1 1/2 hours drive in front of me.
Today, I expect we will have a busy day about which I will report to you tomorrow....
In the meantime...stay well...walk on the sunny side...and accept my greetings/...

This is Kordula, or Kordi for short. She is my cousin, the daughter of my mother's sister, Aunt Elsa.
Kordi is the funniest woman I ever knew. She is fundamentaly witty and knows more jokes than Henny Youngman.
I don't believe that we stopped laughing all afternoon.

This is Gerhild, Kordi's daughter.
Gerhild teaches English and Italian in a highschool in Linz.
She speaks an excellent English and I have no doubt, that her Italian is as good.

She is not only an excellent cook,
but she is also able to open a good bottle of Wine without any difficulties.

I would prefer is you did not ask the identity
of this rather corpulent person sitting beside Kordi.

The Opera within an Opera

Have you noticed? There are Loges on both sides, occupied by Period - clad men and women, watching the performance.

The Roman Quarry - Der Roemische Steinbruch

As you enter this site, you are astonished at the "theatre in the Quarry"

A quick look at the stage and a quarry wall.

People go there two hours early, eat some small sandwiches, drink some good wine and talk.

The stage as it faces you in this ancient Roman Stone Quarry.
Die Buehne, die man anfangs sieht in diesem uralten Roemischen Steinbruch.

Slowly this building parts in the middle and reveals the actual stage behind.

Please don't aks me why I have not done this earlier. I have two faithful followers of my Blog in Austria whose English is not good enough to follow the writings in my Blog. So from now on, Charly and Inge, you will be able to read and not only look at my blog.

(a bissl spat, gell?)

A Candle for Gladys

All of my friends know that I am not a religious man.
In fact, I even agree that religion is the Opium of the People.
In spite of this, there is a candle burning for Gladys in churches in
Salzburg, Schwendau in the Ziller Valley, The Hofkirche (Black Knights) in Innsbruck
in the Mooskapelle in Grinzens, in Velden on Lake Woerther, In Villach,
in Lindau in Lake Constance, in Dresden and as of today in Rust.
Soon there will be candles burning for Gladys in Vienna's St. Stephan's Cathedral
and in the church of St. Stephan in Braunau.

Das Weisse Roessl (The white Horse Inn)

I am truly sorry and not a little frustrated: I am trying to post these items in a logical sequence.
...and yet, somehow I manage to post the last (The end) as the first and the Introduction comes out the Last. I've tried it this way and that way....you just have to start from the bottom and work your way up....
In any event, the show last night was beautiful, colourful and lively, full of great light melodies
and a very imaginative stage production. At the grave risk of being classified as a "cultural light weight" I confess that I truly enjoyed myself despite the occasional drizzle, from which only my camera was protected by a plastic wrap.
If Traviata tonight will be as beautifully staged as last night's White Horse Inn (and they tell me that it is vastly superior) then my visit to Rust was truly a successful adventure.
I was here with Gladys in 2006. we then saw "The Count of Luxenburg" in Moerbisch and in St. Margarethen we listened to a modern version of Bruckner's Eight....We stayed at the same hotel, the Seehotel Rust. We then had a larger room, which I no longer need, and we had a better view.

The weather today is gorgeous: Blue skies with white clouds here and there....
Can I complain? Not bloomin' likely

t'was a truly entertaining performance.
