Up the Mountain....Bergauf geht's

From the start at 600 m to the top, 1900 m in 15 minutes.

Through the badly scratched windows of the gondula...that's the best I could do....

Bergauf, bergab...zwei Goldeln treffen sich, aber....

Two gondulas meet.

With the Telephoto lens into the Valley.

Three snowed-in huts and the view into the valley.

From atop the Petzen, with a 600mm lens,
a view onto Bleiburg.

Von der Petzenspitze mit dem 600 mm Objektif
kann man Bleiburg im Tal liegen sehen. (oben)

Another view into the valley below.

The Cross Country Skier / Der Langlaeufer.

The old saying: Leave nothing behind but your tracks
and take nothing with you but your memories

...is nowhere truer than in the mountains.

Even Cross Country Skiers have to deal with up-hill and down-hill situations.

Winter on the "Petzen"

There's been more snow this year than in many previous years.

Snow, snow and then more snow.

The little town of Bleiburg is suffocating in snow.
Die Kleinstadt Bleiburg erstickt beinahe im Schnee.

Just outside the town, the countryside begins.

AN OLD CUSTOM IN EISENKAPPEL, CARINTHIA - EIN ALTER BRAUCH IN EISENKAPPEL

Towards the end of the Middle-Ages, so the story goes, the river Vellach threatened to flood the village of Eisenkappel. The people sought refuge in the church and promised to sacrifice a wooden model of the church, by floating it down the river. When, oh miracle of miracles, the floodwaters receeded, leaving Eisenkappel undamaged, the citizens fulfilled their promise.
To this day, each 1st day of February, several hundreds of home made models of the church, brightly lit from within by candles, are carried by children and adults in a parade through the main street of Eisenkappel to the river Vellach, where these wooden and paper replicas are placed into the waters.
Throughout the parade, the loud chant, whose meaning is lost in antiquity, is repeated over and over again: "Ante pante populore, kozelna vrate cvilelore."

It was a cold and snowy evening but we braved the elements to photograph this event so we may bring to you, oh faithful readers, these interesting images.

Euer: Bertstravel....

Kirchleintragen in Eisenkappel -

Chanting loudly, "Ante Pante Populore..."
The churches are carried to the river.

They are placed into the river
to be carried downstream.
