the happenings beneath his tree

Winter is here to stay

for a little while longer, anyway!

In Algonquin Park Winter comes early and stays late!

The Snow Geese grab every little spot of open water
for a landing.

Another intelligent (?) question!

If swimming is good for the shape of your body,
then why do Whales look the way they do ??

Does "killing time" damage eternity?

Ain't this a beaut?

At a Chess Convention, two enthusiasts stand in the hotel lobby, telling stories about their recent victories.
The Manager asks them to leave right away, because he can't stand
"Chess Nuts boasting in an open Foyer"

Some more about the Bishop

The Bishop and the Lady.

Yesterday I wrote almost three pages about the recent developments in the Causa Bishop Anton Schwarz.
I had not noticed that the connection of my laptop to the power source had come loose and that I was exhausting the battery. All of a sudden, the screen went dark and everything I had said about these scoundrels ( all of them, not just the Bishop ) was lost. Lost irretrievably into cyberspace.
Yes, certainly I might be able to reconstruct my yesterday's writings, but I lost the will and the urgency.
So here comes a very short summary:
Anton Schwarz was not only the Bishop of Gurk but he was and probably still is a major scoundrel. He, who had promised “celibacy” and a modest life, in fact lived a lavish lifestyle in company with a lady.
I shall not repeat the entire litany of financial misjudgments, which have now come to the light of day, nor will I try to be the judge of his moral deportment.
Let me just repeat the comment made by a panel member and which was not contradicted by 5 other members of a recent debate, aired on ORF 2.
This comment puts it all in a nutshell:
There are only three things which are important in the Roman Catholic Church and they are: Power, Money and Sex.”

Now, come to think of it, I am beginning to wonder: Which invisible hand pulled the plug out of my laptop?

A Repeat Performance

I posted these some years ago. They are, however, funny enough to be repeated

Thee "elderly Gentlemen" are out for a little walk.
First one says: "It's windy, isn't it?"
Second on says: "No, it's Thursday!"
Third one says: "so am I. Let's go for a beer"!

Charly mentions to his friend that he had purchased a new hearing aid.
"Latest technology in hearing aids. Top of the line! I now hear Grass grow.. that's how good this is."
he boasts.
"Is that so?", his friend says. "what kind is it?"
"Three thirty" says Charly.

Sydney, aged 84, has a complete physical check up.
Three days later, the doctor sees Sydney swinging down the Allee with a gorgeous young chick on his arm.
"Hey, you're doing great!" says the doctor.
"I am only following your instructions", says Syd, "Get a hot Mamma and be cheerful"
"I said no such thing" says the doctor in astonishment.
I said: "You've got a heart murmur, be careful"

The "Star Singers"

Accompanied by an adult, four young (mostly) girls
dressed as the "three Kings and the Morning Star"
come to the house and sing some religious ditties
about the birth of Jesus Christ.
They also collect money for a good cause.
This year, Kaspar, Melchior and Balthasar,
collected for the Philippines' victims of the devastating Tsunami.

It is an old custom, which started in rural Austria many years ago.
