The Deserter

The plaque above his grave says:

In Memory
of Private Hauner
who was executed (shot)
in the last days of the 2. World War.

"How can you talk to me of one man's death,

when untold Millions died?"

"Because" he said

The Madness which allowed

this one to die was present in the death of all.

The Deserter(s)

The grave site of the young PFC Hauner
who is the main figure in the book "The Deserters"
The war was almost over. It was the 27th day of April 1945. Private Zauner found himself in the Bavarian town of Simbach. He wanted to go home to his mother. A total fanatic lunatic arrested him, charged him with "desertion", marched him down to the woods along the river and shot him in the back of his head.
At the end the perpetrator of this evil deed knows what he did and the thought crosses his mind:
"The foxes have their lairs,
and the birds of the air have their nests,
but nevermore shall I find a place to lay my head."

the big discovery....

..has nothing to do with Hallstatt, or the Salzkammergut, but it has everything to do with them.
"The pictures posted here look a lot more interesting when viewed in a larger format. By clicking on the small edition you get one almost too large. But it is easily manipulated for a good view. When I looked at the image of the houses down by the lake, I was astonished at the detail visible...so forgive me if I am NOT a computer whizz-bang...but I just discovered this possibility.

When space is at a premium

...here it is evident how the houses cling to the mountain on one side and how they encroach into the domain of the lake.

Each house down by the lake has its own boat house, as we have a garage.

How would you like to climb this stair case each time you come home? You had better not read 0.8

Main Square - Hallstatt

this is part of the main square of this Lilliput town of Hallstatt.
The houses are really a little smaller than normal, but the closeness and angles make them appear even smaller than they are.

Hallstatt am Hallstaetter See

This is Hallstatt, the small town, wedged between the lake and the mountain, so that it accommodates two streets running almost paralell to the lake. It gives the visual impression of a toy-town...(I guess that would make me Ken... ) It features a number of small, but very good hotels, many restaurants and Coffee houses. Today, its main source of income is, of course, tourism. In days gone by it was Salt....how important was "Salt" then? The Romans called it "Sal", a word from which we get "Salary"...that's how important it was.

...another slightly larger view of Hallstatt.
