who is smarter: The Scientist or his wife ?

At first blush one would think that the scientist is the smarter, because he accepts only that which he can experience by sensual perception.
On second thought one has to accept the unexpressed reasoning of his wife:
She sees a flock of sheep, somewhere around 50 in number, and she sees them as "all shorn".
Although she too is aware that she sees only one side of the sheep, she considers it as highly unlikely and certainly against all experience that a farmer would only shear one side of his sheep.
Furthermore it is against the law of probability that all sheep, if shorn only on one side,  would stand in a way which shows only the shorn side to the street.
The Scientist's wife has obviously used more scientific thinking, by considering not only what she can experience through her senses, but she also considered what established practice of sheep shearing tells her as well as the above mentioned Law of Probability.
So, let's hear it for the Wife.

As defined that's what is scientifically known as a "theory" (an idea that is suggested or presented as possibly true but that is not known or proven to be true) and so therefore not only accepted by the scientist but put into practice every day.

the fact is, however, that the scientist did not consider all possibilities, certainly not the law of probabilities, which is surely a scientific principle.
So there...
