Tomorrow we shall meet the San
“You
were really able to arrange for a meeting with a family of
'Bushmen'?”.
Kel's
question conveyed some surprise.
“Yep!”
Ant said, with some pride in his voice. “Through a local guide,
Amy, who lives in the Community. She also teaches some of their
children, I was able to meet some 'Bushmen' or 'San' as they call
themselves, about one year ago. I called Amy from Harare before we
left. She promised to try.”
“Where
will we meet them?” Kel was curious.
“Somewhere
near 'Piper Pan' tomorrow in the early afternoon”
“That'll
be quite a ride”
“But
that's the place, if we want to meet them, and only in company of
Amy.”
“We'll
meet her near the Piper Pan and she'll take us to meet the San.”
“Can't
wait” said John.
Slowly
we drove to our campsite at “Sunday Pan.”
There
were still some good daylight hours left in this glorious day, which
allowed us to take a little detour, which, from a photographic point
of view proved most rewarding.
“You
know, we have been after the big guys, the Elephants and the Lions
but the little guys are also most interesting.” John observed.
Pointing
from our slow moving vehicle to his 2 O'clock right and only about 10
meters from the cruiser we saw a family of ground squirrels. The
first of this group, once he saw us, let out a shrill whistle and
they all disappeared down their escape routes.
Maybe
this is my imagination, but whenever we spotted a group of them,
there was always one who seemed to be the “spotter,” scanning the
sky and the surroundings.
"Look at this little guy, "Ant said,
"he picks only the red little flowers, the rest he doesn't touch."
"There must be lots too eat around here", John remarked,
"for him to be so choosy."
"I seem to recognize this area.
We must be coming pretty close to the Sunday Pan"
"There is a Hyena, casually moving along" John continued.
"True and well spotted" Ant complimented John's eagle eye.
"We're downright lucky" Ant said.
"Look at these two Silver backed Jackals"
Ant brought our Cruiser to a stop. "What luck," he said.
"We are 5 minutes from our camp site and look over there.
A whole delegation of Oryxes."
To see a family of Zebra is always a great pleasure
