It happened some time ago

About 210 Million years ago, in other words, some time prior to my visit to Arizona's Petrified Forest, coniferous trees fell, likely due to some natural disaster.
They were burried in an air tight,  mineral bearing layer of mud, containing mostly Silica, with minor amounts of Iron, Manganese and Carbon giving the end product the rainbow colours.
Every cell of the tree or fern was slowly replaced by the cristaline minerals, all of which gives us today the "Petrified Forest."
