The Deserter(s)

The grave site of the young PFC Hauner
who is the main figure in the book "The Deserters"
The war was almost over. It was the 27th day of April 1945. Private Zauner found himself in the Bavarian town of Simbach. He wanted to go home to his mother. A total fanatic lunatic arrested him, charged him with "desertion", marched him down to the woods along the river and shot him in the back of his head.
At the end the perpetrator of this evil deed knows what he did and the thought crosses his mind:
"The foxes have their lairs,
and the birds of the air have their nests,
but nevermore shall I find a place to lay my head."
